Imagine moving from receiving 2–3 calls in a week to averaging 50 -70 calls in the same time period. That’s Trevor’s life now. And no, its not unsolicited. In fact, this just means he has more opportunity to make a better living.

Since he got listed on Peza, Trevor, a house agent, was finally exposed to a bigger audience, helping him market his service to a wider pool of people looking for a house to rent.

Dumi Kaliati, a developer based in Malawi, saw an opportunity to turn people’s mobile phones into their own personal billboards and classifieds.

“The number of mobile phone subscribers has vastly increased in Malawi and Africa as a whole. This has opened up opportunities, for us developers to [build applications] that connect our users to services” — Dumi

Dumi, co-founded and developed Peza, a USSD and SMS based mobile application that acts as a mobile marketing platform for unskilled labourers.

It all started at a Hackathon organized by Africa’s Talking in mHub Malawi

Running on the USSD code *384*707# on Airtel Malawi, end users can directly connect to unskilled labourers offering services like taxi services, event organising or house hunting services. Once a service has been identified, users can reach out to the service providers via SMS alerts, right from their USSD session.

Since inception, Peza has won 4 different awards including Most Scalable Solution at the ICT Association of Malawi Conference as well as Best Pitch at Blantyre Entrepreneurs Pitch Night

It’s really that simple. This simple solution however, is a big deal for people like Trevor. They may not have access to putting ads on newspaper classifieds or Facebook, but through Peza, they now have the ability to market their services to people in Malawi who own a mobile phone, regardless of the type(smart phone or feature phone)

A simple solution like this is invaluable to Trevor.
