The inaugural AT Summit was a remarkable journey that immersed everyone in the dynamic world of technology, innovation, and networking. It truly felt like winning a lottery to be a part of the event, where all had the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals who shared a deep passion for technology and its endless possibilities. With this electrifying atmosphere as a backdrop, we embarked on a four-day adventure, eagerly anticipating the discoveries and experiences that lay ahead.

The AT Summit wasn’t just any ordinary event. It served as a portal to a realm of learning new ideas and making meaningful connections. It was a great chance for devs to meet many people who were really passionate about technology and establishing a dynamic platform for delving into the ever-evolving African Tech Ecosystem.

Day 1 — UI/UX Design

It all started on Day 1, where we mainly focused on User Interface (UI) and User Experience (UX) design. The keynote sessions served as a captivating initiation, sparking an intense surge of enthusiasm and curiosity. These sessions underscored the transformative influence of design on technology, prompting devs to delve deeply into the craft of creating user-centric solutions. They explored how to make their solutions easy to use while maintaining its aesthetics. Moreover, they understood that design can make a big difference in how well a product does!

The networking sessions on this day were truly unforgettable. Conversations flowed effortlessly as everyone connected with individuals from diverse backgrounds, each sharing their unique perspective on the importance of UI/UX in their respective projects. It was an evening filled with valuable exchanges, new friendships, and shared enthusiasm for the days to come.

Day 2 — Front End Engineering

Day 2 of Africa’s Talking Summit was a journey into the world of Front End Engineering. The energy was palpable as it ventured into the latest trends and best practices in the field. Sessions and workshops unfolded during the breakout sessions revealing the secrets behind responsive design, performance optimization, and creating a seamless user experience.

The day began with a vibrant keynote delivered by our CEO, Paul Wamalwa, as well as our product presentations led by Debra Meja (Messaging), Yvonne Mumbua (USSD), Luchiri Omoto (Airtime & Mobile Data), and Maggy Nyokabi (Voice). Furthermore, presentations on Data Privacy given by Mercy Mutindi (Director, Legal & Compliance, Wasoko) as well as the AT Culture by Christine Shimechero ensued. This ultimately set the tone for what would be an electrifying day.

Thereafter, devs immersed themselves in the intricate world of web design and development, understanding how the tiniest details could have a significant impact on the user experience.

Performance optimization became a core theme exploring the need for speedy and efficient web experiences. Good techniques for reducing load times, optimizing images, and enhancing website responsiveness. The goal was clearly to ensure that web applications deliver a flawless experience regardless of the user’s device or location.

Day 3 — Backend Engineering

The second day of the Summit brought a deeper technological backbone of the industry. The hackathon explored Backend Engineering solutions.

The day’s sessions provided a comprehensive view of the technical infrastructure that supports digital platforms. Devs explored the intricacies of server architecture, databases, the tools and technologies used in the back-end development process. Understanding how data is stored, retrieved, and processed was a fundamental aspect of the discussions.

One of the most significant takeaways from Day 3 was the realization that Backend Engineering and AI/ML often intersect to create innovative solutions. This intersection illustrated the interdependence of different tech domains, highlighting how they work together to drive progress and problem-solving.

Networking during was a continuation of the meaningful connections established on previous days. The shared passion for technology and the excitement of learning together created a sense of camaraderie among attendees. Conversations ranged from the future of AI in everyday life to the challenges and opportunities in Backend Engineering.
